My trusty Korg Minilogue has been sitting in a gig case, since last being used briefly on the track Beyond the Bass. I’ve been meaning to put it to use, so decided to experiment in the way the pioneers did.

With the intention of producing some background soundscapes, I set up the Minilogue with a chain of guitar pedals. Three are notable for the inspiration they gave me. One is the Behringer VP1 vintage phaser, which I’m happy to say turns any synth into a Jarre space machine. Two was a new Donner Circle looper, which allowed me to easily create 4 minute loops that I could repeatedly overdub. Very much a fun thing to do! Three was a Behringer EM600 echo machine, which adds that spacey wash without a DAW. I had a couple of other pedals including a shorter delay at the front end and finally reverb out to a 2 track digital recorder.

Presented here are three tracks plus a highlights mix, but please note that others may be added in this The Minilogue Space (update 20thFeb2022 - 2 additional bonus tracks).

Track 1 Minilogue Spacescape was a live manipulation experiment with a west coast synthesis idea of producing weird and wonderful textures. Do not be surprised if you hear this style of textured soundscape on future releases. This was my original intention.

Track 2 Minilogue Constellation was an experimentation with sequencing the Minilogue. Recording those live sequences, and combining them with a minimal manipulation within the free version of VCV Rack. I can confirm here, that only one Minilogue was used for all the sounds produced.

Track 3 The Minilogue Space was where the Donner Circle looper inspired me even more to play live. For the first time ever I really appreciated the use of the pitch bend on the Minilogue!

Track 4 Minilogue Highlights Mix is presented for a quick fix.

Track 5 Bonus Track - Minilogue Sequencing.

Track 6 Bonus Track - Minilogue Granular Space.

Warning - Please note that Bonus Track 6 being a granular synthesis piece, to my ears does not stream at all well!

No Eurorack modules were harmed in the making of this production.

One of the best Berlin School/EM albums I’ve heard in years. The concept of long-form space music and ambient meditations too often feels like the indulgence of lazy artists who can’t be bothered to edit their material. (Klaus Schulze, whose name has become synonymous with extremely long tracks, actually released only a fraction of the music he produced.) However they were brought to completion, the two long tracks here are focused and feel fully realized. Paul Asbury Seaman
